The name of a medium tells you something about how a painting was made, but it does not describe its entire appearance. An oil painting can be smooth and quiet or thick with visible marks. A watercolour can be airy and transparent or have areas of more substantial colour. Look at the particular work before deciding what you expect from its label.<\/p>\n

Notice how colour sits on the surface<\/h2>\n

Begin with a simple question: does the colour seem to cover what is beneath it, or does light appear to travel through layers? In transparent passages, earlier marks and the support can contribute to the final effect. More opaque areas may read as distinct shapes. Many paintings combine these qualities within one composition.<\/p>\n

The V&A’s introduction to watercolour<\/a> shows the medium’s range, including transparent washes and opaque effects. Its variety is a useful reminder to avoid treating all watercolour as pale or delicate in appearance. The artist’s handling matters as much as the broad category.<\/p>\n

Look for raised marks and thin layers<\/h2>\n

A thickly applied passage can catch light along its ridges, making brush or palette-knife movement visible. The National Gallery describes this built-up surface as impasto<\/a>. In a photograph, a slight side view can sometimes reveal more than a straight-on image, although it cannot replace seeing a physical work.<\/p>\n

Oil painting can also use thin, translucent layers. The National Gallery’s explanation of glazing<\/a> describes how such layers modify underlying colour. A painting may therefore feel deep or luminous without having a strongly raised surface. Thickness is not a measure of quality.<\/p>\n

Follow the edges<\/h2>\n

Edges contribute strongly to the image’s rhythm. Some are sharply defined; others soften into adjacent colour. Notice whether the same kind of edge repeats everywhere or changes around the composition. A crisp line can pull your attention forward, while a blurred transition can let two forms appear to merge.<\/p>\n

You do not need to identify every technique to enjoy these effects. Describe what you see in ordinary words: a watery transition, a dense dark shape, a dry broken mark, or a soft area with paper visible through it. Those observations are useful when comparing works or explaining a preference.<\/p>\n

Keep appearance and specifications separate<\/h2>\n

Materials should be confirmed from the artist or a reliable record. A realistic photograph, and especially a preview illustration, cannot prove whether a work is oil, watercolour, acrylic, a print, or mixed media. Also ask about its support, dimensions, framing, and any display requirements.<\/p>\n
